RODSS (Read Only Dedicated Server System)

Released in November of 2001 and built for unmatched speed and security. RODSS™ is a 100% RAM based operating system built and configured from the Linux kernel.

Always looking for a faster more secure way of delivering web applications, we designed RODSS to be the ultimate in speed and security. All binaries, programs and executables, including an SSL enabled Apache web server, PHP, Perl and a MySQL database are run from a RAM partition without ever touching the OPTIONAL hard drive.

With no dependencies on moving parts, always a "known" clean OS upon boot-up and the speed of RAM v. disk drives, RODSS is the ultimate in reliablity, security and speed.

How does it work..
RODSS starts as an image on a CD-ROM when the machine boots up the magic begins:

  1. The server is booted from an ATAPI CD-ROM
  2. The RODSS image is loaded and the setup begins
  3. 128MB of RAM (configurable) is partitioned as the root directory "/" for the install
  4. RODSS is decompressed and configured within the root directory (RAM DISK)
  5. All 632 executable binaries are installed to the root directory including:
    • Full install of Apache/SSL
    • Complete compilation of PHP
    • Perl and 500+ modules
    • MySQL Database Server
  6. The entire OS and all binaries are now available without ever touching a disk.
  7. User files may now be loaded from other sources, CD-ROM, disks, NFS, etc.
  8. The RODSS server is now ready for any public or private services
If a system compromise is ever detected or even suspected, one quick reboot and the entire OS is restored to a "known" clean version within seconds. Upgrades, patches and enhancements are constantly being made to the current release of RODSS. Whenever an exploit is identified, a fix is made and a new updated image is developed. The new image is burned to multiple CD's and then installed on all servers immediately.
